Welcome to Computer Information Systems

The CIS Department at Henry Ford Community College offers a variety of courses, certifications, and degrees that prepare individuals for careers in the Information Technology (IT) and computer field. Our courses and programs are also frequently taken by IT professionals and entrepreneurs already employed in the field who want to update their skills set.

Jobs in the IT field are consistently ranked by all major news, government, and industry sources as the most in-demand, fastest-growing, highest paying careers in the state, country and world. The 2012 CNN/Money Magazine "Best Jobs in America" report cited IT occupations as the #2, #5, #6, #7 and #9 jobs in the country. The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics lists computer occupations as 5 out of the top 20 fastest growing occupations in the economy for 2004-2014. A March 21, 2013 article in Crain’s Detroit Business magazine wrote that IT jobs are: “our fastest growing regional occupation cluster. In fact, based on job postings, Southeast Michigan has seen some of the fastest growth in information technology occupational demand in the nation, nearly 55 percent in five years. This outpaces growth in well-known tech hubs like Silicon Valley (San Jose), Austin, Boston and others.”

More information on the IT market can be found under IT Market, including an exhaustive set of job market reports for Southeast Michigan.

The IT industry is a very large field with many specializations within it. It is important for anyone considering a career in IT to understand what these specializations are and to choose one. Most IT professionals have a basic understanding and familiarity with each specialization, but possess advanced knowledge and skills in only one or two specializations since it is a lifetime endeavor, and hopefully passion, to stay current in each area.
